ALL ABOUT ME

Guys - welcome to our blog

I am going to write some notes all about me, just like we talked about on Saturday, then I would like you to write all about yourselves so that the others in the class can read it ...

so here goes ... my name is Graham, I am 40 years old - we say that life begins at 40 - do you say that in Portuguese ? and I am not English, I am Scottish.

I am afraid of flying - I really don't like it - so when I go back to scotland I use some combination of boat, train and bicycle ... it takes ages, but it is great fun and the trip is usually the best part of my holiday

I was mayor of lisbon, I would clean up all the dog poo - there is dog poo everywhere andI would pedestrianise lots of streets in lisbon to try and reduce the no. of cars - andIi would ban old men from spitting in the street - truly disgusting ! ( I really like lisbon, but I think it could be so much better than it is )

if I had enough money for plastic surgery , I think I would get my ears done. I think they are too big and stick out too much. I actually play football evey week with a plastic surgeon so maybe one day I will get them done

if my house was on fire I would save my bicycle and my football trainers - they are the two things that I use the most, so are the most precious to me - especially because it is impossible to buy size 48 trainers in lisbon

I am a gemini, but I never read the horoscopes in the papers. I don't understand why people don't like us - we are nice people ! very honest

I would rather have time than money. it took me about 30 years to work this out - but all the things I like doing e.g. playing football, playing chess, going cycling - I don't need any money for, I need time

when I have nothing to do , I buy the Britsh Independent newspaper and go and have a beer

I support Celtic , and hope we qualify from our group, but I think it will be difficult. I think celtic and benfica are fighting for 3rd place as the other two teams have more money and are better than us.

I have done something bad - and it felt great ! I was kicked out of my local golf club in Scotland, but that is a story for another day ...

well that is some information about me, can you pease now add some information about you...

thanks

Hi Graham, hi guys!
Well you asked for it, so I am going to try to talk a bit about myself as you did.
My name is Sara, I am 24 years old and I work for the International Affairs of REFER E.P., where I perform tasks as a secretary and as a translater as well.
Altough I currently live in Barreiro (yeah, the dessert) I was born is Lisbon and I am a real "alfacinha"!
Not like Graham, I am not afraid of flying but I have never gone outside Portugal, so I don't really know if I am going to be afraid of it when I try it.
As for the plastic surgery, I don't think I will ever do a thing like that, I like me the way I are.
I really hope that my house never gets on fyre, because I don't know what I would get out of it.
Being a Libra, sometimes gets on my nerves and the people around me, I never know of what to choose from and that can be very annoying the very least.
Time or money... That's a tricky one... Actually, time is money as Nuno said, but I don't reckon one thing can really exists without the other, nevertheless...
Now, you probably understand why I say that sometimes being a Libra it's a pain in the ***!!!!!!
By the way, nice "speech" Graham!
That's all for now, see you Saturday.

Hello Graham and fellow class mates

Now I know why I didn’t find the mail, how would I ever associate the blog’s title with the British Council?

Anyway, what can I say about me?
Well I can start with the basics, my name is Diogo and I’m 20 years old. I live in Lisbon and I quite like it although there are a few things that should be changed especially peoples behaviour towards each other… but I think that’s another story for another time.
I don’t really care about Football, maybe that’s why I didn’t even take notice to the mail in the first place, I think it’s a rather boring sport to watch 20 rich guys in shorts running around a grass field all sweaty and spiting all over… No not my kind of sport.
My favourite sport is actually one which many people would not consider a sport but it actually is and there are competitions of it like in all sports, that sport is Rock Climbing. Although I’ve only been doing it for a couple of months I’ve always liked as a kid to climb everywhere, tables, walls and piles of little rocks. Now it’s very different a rope, a friend (to give me security) and a 10 meters high granite wall is what I climb. Do I get scared? Every single time but in the end it feels great.
What more can I say?
Hmmm… let me see. I used to live in Miratejo, on the other side of the river, when I was a little but then my parents moved to Lisbon so that they, and me, would be closer to their work places. My mother teaches Philosophy in high school and my father teaches Sociology in University. Me? Well, being born between two teachers gave me a precise idea of what I did not want to do with my future. I once wanted to be an Egyptologist but that was a very long time ago. More recently I wanted to go to genetics but unfortunately my grades were not as good as I had hoped and because of that I had to find another way out. After some investigation on search engines on courses I might want to take and hints of friends and family I finally decided to go with Photography which is something that I have always had an interest on but never actually explored or even thought of following. This Monday I will start classes, finally, and I’m really excited with it.
Asking yourself why am I at the British Council learning English from a Scottish teacher? Well it has been in my mind, and my parents, that I could go aboard to University and the UK was in fact the first option. But, like everything, there are a few requirements one of them is actually knowing how to speak, listen and write in English… I bet that one took you by surprise! Some more researching and I ended up in this British island in the middle of one of the oldest parts of Lisbon. The first thing said to me by my father first time I stepped inside it was “Where’s the old library? I can not believe they’ve modernized it!” well big disappointment for my father, I don’t actually mind it though.
Did I miss something? Oh yes I can actually tell you more for example my music taste I like rock, metal, classic, jazz, blues… let us say I like a little of each style. I also like movies it’s always fun to go out with some friends and see a movie before making our way to some bar. At least we always have a topic to talk about.
I think that nails it. There is nothing more, of greater interest to you, that I could say (write in this case).

All the best to everyone who reads this.

Hi everybody!

As Graham requested I’m here to introduce myself to the class so that you can know me a little better. I’m 24 years old and live in Linda- a-Velha, a village not far away from the capital.

There are three reasons why I'm learning English: above all it's essential that I master the language because I've always wanted to be a translator, secondly we all know that English is the universal language of communication and nowadays people who speak English have greater chances of finding a job as people who don’t and last but not least I reckon the language is beautiful and sounds great!

I never visited other countries, not because I'm afraid of flying, but because I don't have the money to do it. However, I've already had the opportunity to fly in a little aeroplane called Cessna with a friend of mine when he was attending classes to take his pilot’s licence. It was him who aroused my interest in the world of aviation. I’m not certain anymore that I will become a translator as the idea of travelling around the world as an air hostess is more and more attractive.

To a desert island I would take my ballroom dancing teacher, my partner and a stereo because while waiting for the boat to rescue us, I could dance the cha-cha-cha and the slow fox. Although I only started dance classes 4 months ago, I’m very enthusiastic about this sport because it’s a combination of rhythm and elegance.

I like my name a lot and wouldn’t change it for any other because it is so uncommon in Portugal that I usually am the only Carmen people know. Besides, my dad named me after my grandma because she was grandmother for the first time in her late eighties. In Spain, where she was born, Carmen is a very usual name.

The worst thing about me is the anxiety. I’m very ambitious and want everything at the same time. When I have to wait until I achieve my goals I often hit the roof.

I am a gemini and I always read the horoscopes in papers and magazines to make fun of it because they always fail their predictions. I do believe that star signs influence people’s characters though and I identify with most characteristics of my sign. For instance, I’ll definitely be always a little child, at least spiritually, (besides I was born on the 1st of June, the international children’s day) I’m very talkative and I’m very likely to change mood out of the blue.

My favourite T.V programmes are soap operas. Nothing feels better than putting your feet up at the end of the day in front of the television while eating a chocolate. It’s really relaxing and prepares you for a long night of sleep.

Now it’s your turn! Tell me a bit about you!

Hello everyone.

My name is Alexandra and I’m 24 years old although most people think I look much younger. This week a woman actually thought I was 14 years - That’s a record. I think life is much better when we are young and if I could I would be 17 or 18 years old forever.

I live in Oeiras and I enjoy living there. It is near the beach and not too far from downtown. The only bad thing is that if you work or study in downtown, while by car it may take you 15-30 minutes to arrive to your destination, by public transport it takes ages; never less than 1hour.

I’m graduated in Economics and worked for a year in a major IT consultancy company. I had the opportunity to travel and overall it was a good experience. Now, I am looking for something more specific in the business field.

I am an animal lover so, if my house was on fire my main concern would be saving my pets and only then my laptop.

Why I am learning English? Firstly, because I really like the language; I can’t get enough of it. My mother says it’s because some of our ancestors were British. Actually that’s a good story to be checked out: my family tree. Secondly, you can read Carmen’s explanation about it being a universal language… I share the same opinion.

My favourite sport is football. I am a Benfica supporter, and when I was younger, instead of hanging out with other girls I used to play football with the boys. And believe it or not I was pretty good at it.

The last book I read for pleasure was “The ruins” from the author Scott Smith. It is an unsettling story about a group of friends who are vacationing in Cancun and decide to explore some ruins located in a hidden and ancient part outside the city… and to cut a long story short, they enter in a sort of forest and from that moment on a series of bad things start happening to them. If you like the T.V. programme “Lost” you will also like the book. I read it in less than 2days. Dreamworks bought the cinematographic rights, so sooner or later a film based on the book will be in the theatres.

That’s all for now people.
See you next class.

Hello guys!

Here I am writing about me as Graham demanded. My name is Leonardo, probably you have already realised. I’m 21 years old and I live in Lisbon, in Benfica to be precise. Regarding my studies, this year I am starting a master degree in dentistry.

Concerning the cliché: Why am I studying English?
Well, I reckon that studying English will have a vital importance in my future professional life. Nowadays, if you don’t speak English you are quite ignorant. That is the way I think and it seems to be the way it works! Basically English is the international language par excellence. As we walk on to a unified Europe where today we work here, tomorrow in London, the day after in Berlin…we must understand each other and as far as I’m concerned English will do that job. That’s why I ended up at the British Council some years ago. How many years? Hum…don’t ask me difficult questions…it runs to double figures, really!

I love travelling and visiting other countries. I found Phuket in Thailand very impressive and New York a city from another world!

I can say that I am a fan of the aircraft industry in general and of Boeing Company in particular. Despite liking microlights it is the commercial aviation that fascinates me!

In my free time I like to play tennis or golf, explore the internet, playstation and so on… If my house was on fire I’d save my laptop, for sure.
Actually, I don’t watch much TV. However, I’ll certainly watch this Graham’s dream expressed on the blog title…you know, it is, definitely, one of those dreams that never happen. If the title was the other way round…

My star sign is Libra. I can’t tell if I follow the typical characteristics of a Libra because I don’t really care. The only thing I do is to make fun about the crap (predictions) that is written in those free newspapers. I just wonder: is there anyone that invests his/her money following the horoscope advice?

Well, I guess it is enough. I hope you could get at least a general idea…

See you on Saturday!

'first i was afraid, i was petrified...' Remember? Gloria Gaynor's song... That's how i feel everytime i open the blog... well, the title doesn't help... but i'm in favour of liberty of speech, so... what can I say beside expressing my disapproval??
What can I say about me? Well, let me think… I can start from the beginning… I´m Inês! I’m a music addict and if my house was on fire I’ll have to save all my cds from burning… I have to control myself from getting in Fnac… or I’ll lose my head and all my savings.

I live, for the moment, in Oeiras, next to Alex, and work in the beautiful city of Setúbal, whish I adore. I think it’s because of the sea… Or because of the people. Or because of the sea and the people. It’s a beautiful city and I already found a nice farm where I can buy some spectacular wine… Well, as you get older you start to appreciate other things in life…

I’m a scorpion! Be afraid!!!! Everybody says that is the worst sign of the horoscope… Perhaps they have never met me…!!!

For now I think that’s enough… or not??

Hi everyone! I hope you are having a wonderful weak.
My name is Zara Chan Nogueira, I'm a 17 year old girl and I was born in Macao. I've been living in Lisbon for the last 13 years and I'm now studying in colégio s. joão de brito, in the 12th grade.I've been in BC since I was 6 and I also speak Chinese (cantonese). I want to study Medicine and I was thinking about gratuating in the UK. After graduation, I would love going to an African or Asian country in missions.
My greatest fear is height. Since ever, I remember being afraid of heights, it's always that feeling of being pulled down from a tall building or from a cliff.
Plastic surgery? Well I haven't really thought about that, but I have no prejudice against it. I reckon people have the right to improve the way they look, if that is what makes them feel better.
If my house got on fire, I would probably take my laptop or my photo albums... I am stuck to my memories, I love seeing pictures, reading old letters, I keep a diary,... All things a typical cancer would do. They say people who are Cancer tend to be sensitive, temperamental, reserved, nostalgic, idealistic... totally me!
If I went to a desert island I would take my friends with me. I think everything can be easier and more enjoyable when you are surrounded by your friends.
The thing I like the least about me is being absent-minded. I often forget things, that's why I have to write everything down in my agenda and stick yellow post-it's all over my room and my desk.
I have been to London (several times), to Barcelona, Venezia, Paris, Bangkok, Macao, Hong Kong, Brazil. I love travelling. We learn more about the world and ourselves by meeting different people and seing other cultures.
As for religion, I am catholic. I've done several volunteer work, helping 'Banco Alimentar', 'Comissão Nacional de Justiça e Paz' and 'Infantário da Cruz Vermelha'. My hobbies are ballet, swimming and drawing.
Well I guess I could keep on saying things about me, but then you wouldn't even bother getting to know me better.
See you guys on Saturday !

Wassup?!

Hey everybody, I'm Nuno Carvalho, I'm 17 and I come from right here in Queluz.

Everyone's talking about what they like so I'm just going to tell you what I DON'T like...

I don't like timetables or strict schedules;
I don't like to sit around doing nothing;
I don't like people who need to think about a joke;
I don't like people who are hypocritical or think they are superior;
I don't like too much heat;
I don't like too much cold for that matter;
I don't like to be obligated to do something that I didn't choose in the first place;
I don't like... many other things but you might just be too bored or scared to read on so... If I don't like something about you I'll probably tell you.

You want to know what I like? Come chat me up, what you see is what you get.

Peace out and ROCK ON!
